Android survey app development for a client in Nigeria

Client

The client is providing high technical ICT skills in Nigeria. Established in 2006 by an experienced, high technical ICT personnel. And promptly became a certified Engineering company to comply with International standard guidelines that consistently and reliably delivers what it promises.

Challenges

The client’s requirement was to develop an application to build survey by field enumerators.

This App should be installed only on a pre-defined list of ANDROID devices, and should capture the geographical coordinates automatically during data input.

The data uploaded by the enumerators should be updated into the online DB for approval by the administrator and a copy will be left in the local device.

If the device is not within the network range, data should be synchronized automatically with the DB when the device falls within the range of the network.

This mobile app can be installed and used only on the devices that are allowed by the administrators in the web admin panel. This is to ensure data & application security.

What We Did

Downloading and Installing – Mobile App will be installable after approval from Admin. The IMEI number of mobile device is sent to admin panel. Once the admin approves, then the app can be downloaded by Field enumerators

Registration – The app is downloaded from server and for the first time the user has to register six digit pin Number. The pin number will be mapped to IMEI number. This registration is done for security aspect of App. When the enumerators inputs a valid six digit number, it will stored in admin database and will be compared each time when the enumerators log in into the application.

Login – The GPS option should be on in handheld device for successful login. Enumerator should enter the 6-digit Login PIN to open the Mobile App to enter data. Only if the Login PIN entered by enumerator and device IMEI number matches with Pin number and IMEI number mapped in device management of Admin module, login will be successful.

Hamlet Setting – The enumerator will be assigned to a Hamlet from the App, in the drop down box provided. Enumerator will assign all the NPC~EAs for the Hamlet. He will also assign all Polling Units for the corresponding Hamlet.

Configure Variable Items – In this module, the authorized Field enumerator users will be able to view, add and edit the variable Items. And can navigate to the ‘Variable Items’ list by tapping on the Thematic Group.

Data Sync Status – This module helps to know whether data is in synchronization between database of Admin Panel and database of Mobile App. If Field Enumerator is not within network range, the data will be stored in the Mobile App Database. Also helps field enumerator to know whether their database is in sync with admin database.

• Multi-peer connectivity framework (Wireless mesh networking) through Wi-Fi is the highlight feature of the mobile version. The user can send and receive messages to the people by just turning on his Wi-Fi and the list of people in his Wi-Fi range will be listed out, and he can connect to those people without connecting to the internet.
• Live tracing option is provided and that works using Socket and GPS. Through Socket the location details will be sent to server for fast sending and receiving than web services.
• A message can be Scheduled and sent on a certain date/time. This can be done in server side.
• Option to delete the sent message/video/photo, from the recipient’s messenger if the recipient has not checked it yet.
• Photos and media content can be deleted through passing the feed id to server for delete request through web service.

The Client was maintaining a web portal for a holy place with his personal interest, the portal encompass information about that holy place with its pilgrimage details, which enlightens divinity of the place.

Challenges

• Client required a mobile app which has to be integrated with Google map to display selected pilgrimage route
• It has to be in android platform adaptable in mobile devices and tablets.
• Users avail the paid version of the app by downloading it from the Google Play Services in to their mobile and tablet.
• The mobile application should be built with predefined route.
• Administrator should be given privilege to set any no. of hot spots around the predefined route
• The hot spot must have an Image, description and details
• When a user tap on the spot, a detailed description page should be opened in next screen
• Admin will manage ads which would be displayed at bottom of the app.
• The images uploaded by admin should be displayed to the users.
• App users would be able to view their present position and distance with respect to starting point and end point.
• Client also required managing hot spots around the route and scrolling ads in the app page

What We Did

• As per the requirement, app has been integrated with Google map to display the selected route by default. The app would be available in Google Play Store so the user can install the app in their Android mobile devices.
• ‘Terms and Conditions’ of the app will be displayed only at the first time of application launch, along with provisions to view that later.
• An alert will be generated to turn ON GPS, when the app is launched every time to track the user. A custom GPX file is provided to set the keyspots from the predefined route will be uploaded in the Admin panel.
• The app displays Google maps with the predefined route keyspots and hotspots (as markers) in the home screen of the app.
• A button has been provided to start the pilgrimage journey; if the user clicks the start button then they will be tracked through GPS from their mobile device.
• If the GPS is not turned ON at the time of app launch, an alert will be displayed and makes the user to turn ON GPS.
• By making use of this user will get the details like distance covered from their starting point and the remaining distance to reach the end point with color differentiation on the map, distance in kms and the walking time that will be taken to cover the remaining distance.
• Once the users reach the destination, the users have to manually switch OFF the GPS to avoid draining of the battery in their mobile devices.
• The users also get notifications when they are nearer to any keyspots or hotspots. On tapping any hotspot / keyspot, a snippet will be displayed and it will be navigated to the detailed screen of the respective hotspot / keyspot.
• Admin has given privileges to control Ads which has to be displayed to the users,. Users can also view the images uploaded by admin in app gallery section and also information about the place.

Client required an android app which has to be integrated with their existing server to share the stock details from various location / ware house. The app should be adaptable for both mobile devices and tablets, from that app the user should get their apk file and the app should help them to track the product stock details that has to be delivered, and this app have to provide the stock details in each ware house by synchronizing with the server based on the location and type.

What We Did

We developed mobile app in android platform for mobile devices and tablets, user can install the app by getting the apk file from the administrator in to their mobile and tablet.

The app had five important fields such as,

• Date – will be filled with current date
• Location – dropdown of ware house locations
• Type – List of Values – Opening Stock / DC / GRN / Others / Inventory
• Quantity
• Bar Code
  • The Location and Type of stock would be perfected from the server using web service, here the user can enter the qty using bar code reader facility, and they can capture the Bar Code of the product.
  • All the saved details would be sent to server using another web service, and user can share the stock details of all products in server.
  • If data is entered in entry screen the scanner would initiate the scan process using the mobile camera, user can scan multiple items and by default it will have 2 options to select on the screen – Stock and Scan.
  • User can enter the quantity they are going to scan and then the scan process is initiated by clicking on start, it scans the bar-codes one by one until the user clicks stop .On each scan the details will be sent to the server in the background .
  • If stock is selected the resultant count of a particular query will be displayed, from which the client will be sharing.
  • The List screen will have the list of entries made for that particular location and type selection for the day along with the quantity scanned, and with the option to multi-select/ select all the listed items and delete if required.
